Long-Lewis Sterling
"Quality First—Customer Always"
OUR PURPOSE
Long-Lewis Sterling is dedicated to creating mutually beneficial business partnerships with our customers where our
products, services, and efforts serve as a critical enabler to their success—organizationally and individually—in their
efforts to support the distribution needs of our country; and to build a value based organization which enhances the welfare,
well being, and growth of our team members and their families.
In 1887, Mr. William J. Long opened the Cornice & Iron Works in Bessemer, AL. With
the success and growth of the company,
Mr. Long's Cornice & Iron works grew into the Bessemer Hardware Company. In 1895 Mr. Long and Mr. Lewis merged their
hardware stores to form the Long Lewis Hardware Company. With continued growth of the company a new product line was added,
the harness and buggy. As the country moved into the automobile era, buggies were replaced with the "Horseless
Carriage." Long Lewis Hardware Company was awarded the Ford Franchise by Henry Ford in 1915. Thus Long-Lewis began its ascent into the
"Industrial Age" where it has remained in the attack to this day!
In 1986, Mr. Vaughn Burrell became the President/CEO of the Long Lewis Company. Previously, Mr. Burrell had been the General
Manager for 22 years. Under his direction, the company was awarded a Sterling Franchise in 1998. Seizing the initiative
and realizing the trucking industry was a fast-paced, ever-expanding industry which demanded dedicated professional sales
and product support, Mr. Burrell split the Ford car and light truck business from the Medium and Heavy duty truck dealership
and established two full service dealerships in Bessemer and Huntsville. The Bessemer facility has undergone, and remains
under, renovation with current efforts focused on the Service and Parts facilities. The Huntsville store, opened in January
1999, is a new facility built from the foundation to roof with one thing in mind—sales and service support to the trucking
industry.
Starting in the vehicular business after his return from the Korean War, Mr. Burrell has been a driving force
by successfully
operating and building "Quality
First—Customer
Always"
organizations. Like Bear Bryant, Vince Lombardi, and Eddie Robinson, his standards of conduct and
character based principles have stood the test of time and consistently built winning organizations and teams.
